DUST 514: Most Ambitious Game of Show?

"Of the many games I've seen here at Gamescom 2011, Dust 514 may be the most ambitious."--IGN's Daemon Hatfield

am·bi·tiousAdjective/amˈbiSHəs/ 1. Having or showing a strong desire and determination to succeed. 2. (of a plan or piece of work) Intended to satisfy high aspirations and therefore difficult to achieve.

Well, we certainly can't say we haven't heard these accolades thrown out before can we? MAG was billed as a thinking man's shooter and FPS/MMO wasn't it? Keep in mind, that is NOT a slight in the least, for all MAG's flaws we've consistently stated the the concept was brilliant. The implementation was the aspect that was average (read that again. not poor...average) but with DUST, i think those of us who are in search of a true FPS/MMO have finally reached the end of the rainbow. Our team here recently had a discussion of games that could pull off the FPS/MMO concept. The list is small, let me tell you. EVE, Starcraft, HALO, SOCOM, COD. Battlefield. That's it, people. Those are the franchises with the following and respect necessary for FPS and MMO people to take them seriously. Zipper went out on a limb and tried a new IP with MAG, but had MAG been a SOCOM FPS/MMO it'd have worked. PERIOD. That's how large their following was.

Now CCP is up to bat, and i've got to tell you. I think they're ready to hit a home run based on their history of success. The beta can't come soon enough. In the meantime, here's a link to IGN's coverage of DUST 514 at Gamescom. http://ps3.ign.com/articles/118/1189206p1.html
