Dust 514 Goes Free-to-Play

In a stunning move that has probably guaranteed its success, CCP has made the decision to commit to a F2P model for Dust 514 instead of the "cover charge" that was initially mentioned. We applaud this news here at Dusters, as it means that potentially an enormous amount of interested and curious players will be exposed to the game instead of it being reduced to a niche title by lack of advertising and cost. Now players that may have been on the fence for this title can try it out without having to commit coin.

We're of the opinion that gaming NEEDS a title like Dust 514, it just doesn't know it yet. So this is some of the best Dust news yet, now all CCP has to do is follow through with a quality title and great gameplay. At this point all we need to hear about are a solid advertising campaign (which will only be aided by the F2P status) Hardcore Gameplay, A Solid Grouping System, Battle Simulators, total amount of simultaneous players and what solution they've devised for the abuse of Alt Accounts with the ease of the PSN signup. (particularly important now that ANYONE can make an account) hopefully we'll hear some details soon.

  1. very excited about this game now that it'll be all-access. MAG should have done this.

  3. But aren't you worried that the fact of it being free will bring every IDIOT out there into the game?? Even people who are not FPS players. Anyone who will go to the PSN Store when Dust is released will see "DUST 514 MMO FPS 100% free to play" or something within those lines. And the result is everyone downloading it, and it gets infested with people who have no idea about what their are doing. That decision CCP made really worried me, and makes me feel as if its going to be game breaking.

  6. just imagine if MAG had been F2P when it first released? the population alone would have kept the game going for years. hardcore players will group together and herd the masses. even still, lone wolf COD-style players wont ruin it as long as there is a mandatory training mode or intro that shows people how to play.

  7. u see the early halo vid? its corny team deathmatch cant compete with real persistence but it looks great. CCP needs to give us more video!

  8. I think that the decision to go F2P is probably more Sony's decision than CCP's.They probably realized that there just might not be enough people playing than they would like,so in order to compete with games like Halo 4 coming out,so maybe this is probably their best choice.

Personally,I'm a bit concerned just like SuperMido.F2P will do the same thing that DCUO did when it went F2P.There will be a ridiculous number of people initially online, but of course whether the game is good or bad, there's going to be a drop off.Now depending on how good the game is will determine how much of a drop off there is.

So after all of the wannabe's finally leave,I think that's when CCP is going to start really pushing more stuff in their microtransactions, because let's face it,they have to make their money some sort of way,and being completely F2P ain't it.
